Impeccable pies are being celebrated here at The Lock Inn this March during British Pie Week. A foodie first for us we are showcasing the humble pie at its very best; full to the brim with variety, flavour and lots of fillings including our very own Bishop’s British beef as well as some tasty vegetarian, vegan & GF options. A little bit of history….

The Lock Inn, Wolverley is situated on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, which runs South/North through the south eastern corner of Wolverley a pretty Worcestershire village, on the outskirts of Kidderminster. The lock itself has a fall of about three meters, causing some challenges for the boating populous, particularly after a cheeky pint of two in the summer!

 

The canal was built in 1772 by James Brindley (famous for many of the canals and waterways around the Birmingham area and now immortalised in the city centre’s Brindley Place hot spot).

 

Historically the canal was a crucial form of transportation of goods out of the Black Country and Staffordshire and on to Birmingham and the Worcestershire towns along its route. Opposite the Lock Inn and just by the lock is the Old Smithy tearoom. In its former life this was one of the main blacksmiths along this stretch of the canal. In fact local history says the pub was only converted into an inn after the demand from workers grew so much due to the backlog at the smithies! It was an enterprising cottage owner who started selling beer to the waiting workmen and thus the Lock Inn as a hostelry began.
